Manicure Monday: Nail Polish Dupes

It's a Manicure Monday!  After I finally went through my nail polish collection, I realized that I had two dupes in my collection!  It's so true what they say - you're always attracted to similar things.  So of course, I had to share with you all...

The colors I am wearing are below with links...

Red Polish
Butter London - Chancer $15.00
Sally Hansen - Red Carpet $2.99

Purple Polish
Butter London - Lovely Jubbly $15.00
Sally Hansen - Rockstar Pink $2.99

I painted my pointer finger in the Butter London and my middle finger in the Sally Hansen version.  I honestly couldn't tell the formula difference in each color.  They are so incredibly similar.  I wish I would have known about these Sally Hansen polishes before I invested in the expensive Butter London polishes.

At least I can share all my money saving info with you, so go out and get the inexpensive versions if you like these colors.  So make sure to check out the Sally Hansen line next time you head to your local drug store.  There are some amazing colors in that range.

Do any of you have Sally Hansen or Butter London polishes?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Lip Balm Review: em Pillow Plush

Today I'm going to talk about a product I've been using since mid December.  I received this as a product in my Ipsy bag back in November of last year.  I do posts of my Ipsy bag subscription each month, so look out for those (here, here, here).

I got this Pillow Plush by em Cosmetics in December (before I started this blog), and I never tried it until about 1/2 way through the month.  This is a plushy lip balm that's super hydrating without feeling too sticky.

In mid December I had ran out of my "makeup routine" lip balm so I finally reached for this one.  Let me tell you, I'm so glad I did!  I got the color Sorbet in my Ipsy bag, this is only slightly tinted.  It just darkens my lips just a bit, not a dramatic change at all.  Highly recommended!

This is the only product I've ever tried from the em Cosmetics line by Michelle Phan (she also owns Ipsy).  Have any of you tried out any other products from her line?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Nail Polish Clean Out + GIVEAWAY!

So I've been doing lots of Spring Cleaning/Organizing projects around my place lately.  Last weekend I tackled the all-mighty nail polish collection....  This was a serious undertaking.
I used to have all my nail polish in brand and color order.  I finally decided, after much consideration, to put everything in color order only.  And, OMG I had sooo many repeat colors.  Here is a fun photo of how my polish collection looked - Before & After.

I started this process during the day and didn't finish until after the sun set, so that's why my "after" photo is a little wonky.  But, I'm sure you get the jest of it.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, these handy dandy wall mounted nail polish racks can be found on Amazon, here.  I have 3 of them, but I'm only using 2 in the photos.  These are better than salon quality racks that you see at the nail salon.  This acrylic is super thick and mega durable.

This is going to be a super long bog post for you all today, but trust me...  It will be worth it!

I decided that since I have been doing my blog for a while now, and all of you tend to like my giveaways, I would do a nail polish giveaway :)  Who doesn't love a little extra nail polish, am I right?!

Fashion Friday: Hanger Change

Welcome to another installment of Fashion Friday.  I am still in Spring Cleaning mode with my closet, but don't worry I will have a fun fashion haul coming up soon :)  On to the organization!

I am a big believer that if you have an unorganized closet, you will overbuy clothing & not like anything you put in there.  That being said, I have been wanting to change out my plain old plastic tube hangers for some time.

Recently I have been watching a few YouTube videos where people are doing closet clean outs, and many of them were using these cool new hangers.  I'm sure I may be the last person on this bandwagon, but at least I'm here now.

I'm talking about these super thin Huggable Hangers.  I got mine at Target, The Container Store & Amazon.  For more details on the hangers click here and here.  Now there is about 25% more room on my closet bar since I moved to this style of hanger.  Now that I have more room in the closet, it's a bit easier to see what I have and what I don't.  The silver detail on the top is also very appealing with the black hanger.

Overall I am very pleased with the way these new hangers look in my closet.  I also don't have any trouble with tank tops and sweaters slipping because the hangers have a fuzzy-feel to them.  That special material on the hanger grips the fabric of your clothing so it wont fall to the floor.  I love that!

Now, I'm excited to go into my closet each day to pick out an outfit.  The black hangers just make my closet look so much more grown-up.  It's the little things that make me happy!

Do any of you use these Huggable Hangers?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Skincare: Proactiv Step 3

My skincare has progressed over the years.  I started using Proactiv in my early 20's and I haven't stopped since.

Funny story on how I started using it...  I actually took some of my brothers unused products because I ran out of face cleanser and lotion, way back when.  After my mom told me about the 3 step system, I was hooked.  I'm glad I ran out of my old stuff, so I could discover this amazing product

I started off, like most people, using the entire 3 step system.  It worked well for me for a while, but as my skin changed so did my skincare needs.  I had to readjust my system as my needs changed.   I mean it's been over 10 years since I started using this product, so of course my skin has changed a bit.

Over the years I progressed into only using the 3rd step.  This is the acne medication step that kills the bacteria, and to me this is the most important step.  Right now I am using the Tea Tree line from The Body Shop.  I'm sure I'll do a blog post on that range eventually.  I want to use it for a bit longer to give a full review.

I typically get my Proactiv lotion at my local mall kiosk.  Their website is extremely confusing to use if you only want to purchase one product and not the entire system.  So the mall is a great place to get stocked up, for me.

I can't recall the price, but it's not cheap.  But one of these bottles will last me about 4 to 5 months, and I only apply this once per day - in the morning, after I shower.  I have a special night cream I wear to help with breakouts/oily skin so I don't apply twice.

Do any of you have a HOLY GRAIL way to ward off the occasional breakout?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Hair Oil: Ojon

Let's talk about hair, shall we?  I am not too picky about my hair.  It just kind of lays there and doesn't do much.  It's been pretty straight my whole life, except for the perm debacle in the early 90's....  I'll have to post a photo on Instagram tomorrow of my crazy perm in action.  Make sure to follow me on Instagram at favoritedaughteremily - it will be epic I promise.

Okay, so lets get back to the task at hand - Hair Oil.  I use the Ojon Damage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum.  You only need a few drops and then apply it to the ends of your hair.  The serum retails for $25.00 per bottle.  It's a bit pricey, but I've had my bottle for over 6 months and it's only about 1/2 way gone.  And, to note, I do have longer hair.  So it definitely lasts a while.

This oil helps my hair stay silky smooth and combats fly-aways throughout the day.  My hair is naturally straight with a bit of texture.  My hair has become slightly wavy since I've gotten older.  Who knows why...  Must me a cosmic hair mystery.

Applying this hair oil also helps with all my hair cuts as well.  I don't need to go in as often to get a trim.  Even though I don't get my hair done at a fancy salon.  Cost Cutters is just fine with me.  If I had more issues with my hair I would probably go to a fancy salon, but I don't need to do that because my hair is so plain.  It's pretty hard to mess up a basic trim.

And I also think of it like, "it's just hair, it will grow back".  I have never been too fussy over my hair, but maybe someday I'll change my tune on that.

Do any of you use any hair products to help with the texture?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Pantry Organization

Over the past weekend I decided to reorganize my pantry and I thought I would share my "after" photos and tell you what I did.  Spring cleaning is one of my favorite things (I know, I'm strange), and my pantry gets a full overhaul too!

In my apartment I have a super long hall closet with lots of room for storage.  I decided to make this huge closet an extra pantry on one side, and all my extra personal care items on the other.  I will share the other side of my closet soon.  I love to share my organization!

It's spring, so I decided to clean out my closet and donate some of the food that I had not been reaching for recently.  I went into my purge with one question in mind, "Will I eat this in the next 3 months?"  If the answer was NO, I got rid of it.

After the purge, I re-organized how everything was laid out in the closet.  I am very happy with the results.  Below is a breakdown...

Row One:
The only food item in this row is tortilla chips.  I love chips and salsa as a fun treat once and a while and there was a bit of space on this shelf.  The other items are random cleaners; Room Spray & Hand Soap.

Row Two:
Microwave Popcorn, Pasta Sauce, Wheat Pasta, Pudding, Salad Dressing, Peanut Butter, and Crisco Spray.  You can see the Dog's Beggin' Strips behind there.  Again, it's peeking over from the other side of the closet.

Row Three:
Tuna Fish, Canned Soup, Pickles, Soy Sauce, Pita Chips, Apple Sauce/Fruit Cups, Crackers, Pasta Meals, and Cereal.  There are some disposable Glad-Ware containers hiding next to the Cereal.  I rarely use these anymore, but I figured I should keep some extras on hand.

So how do you organize your pantry?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Makeup Monday: MAC Studio Finish Concealer

Today we are taking Makeup Monday to a not so glamorous place... concealer.  It's a necessary item for all of us makeup wearing people out there.  Concealer can make a huge difference in our overall look, as well as a little boost of face confidence before you walk out the door.

My favorite cream concealer is by M.A.C.  Their Studio Finish Concealer is great at covering hyperpigmentation, breakouts and evening out skin tone.  Here is a link if you'd like to see more details.

I am in the shade NW20, I always try to get my concealer about one shade lighter than my normal skin tone.  I am usually trying to lighten up an area on my face, so that works best for me.  I also went into a M.A.C Pro Store to get mine professionally matched by a makeup artist.

I am also into using a basic concealer brush to apply to the face and then blend this product out with my finger.  I like to apply my concealer after my foundation.  I want to apply this only to the areas my foundation didn't cover.  No need to over-wear makeup.

I have been using this product for over 2 years, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a good face concealer.  It's a little pricy at $18.00, but a little goes a long way.

So do any of you have a good recommendation for a concealer?  I always love to try out new things.  Let me know in the comments, if you care to share.

Compression Socks

Hello loyal readers!  Today I am answering a reader question from Friday.  On my last Fashion Friday entry I posted about sock drawer organization.  You can read that post here.  The reader was inquiring about my socks, so I am here to answer all your questions.  Let's get into it.

I loooooove compression socks.  They are like a little ((HUG)) for your feet!  But I only the short ones, I have major KANKLES (thanks dad) so I don't like socks that go above the ankle on me.

My favorite compression socks are from Old Navy.  The blue ones in the photo are from there.  You can find these in the athletic section of your Old Navy store, they haven them for Men and kids also.  They typically retail for $6.50 per pair, but in my opinion they are totally worth it.

I've had most of my socks from Old Navy for about 3 years, and they've held up great!  I even got my brother a few pairs for Christmas because he kept asking me questions about compression socks.  Merry Christmas, bro!!!

Here is the link to Old Navy if you are interested. (link)

I also get these neutral Asics socks from DSW Shoe Warehouse.  The website doesn't have these specific socks listed.  But I recall they come in a 3-pack and retail for about $12.00.  I've only even been able to find this design/style at DSW.  These ones are little more prone to pilling and discoloration on the bottom of the foot, so I replace these typically every other year or so.

I know this was kind of an odd post, but I wanted to answer a question from a reader.  If you have any questions for me, feel free to post a comment or send me a message on Facebook, and I will answer all of them.  I may even do a blog post about it so keep your eyes peeled for that.  Keep the questions coming!!! :)

What kind of socks do you prefer?  I'd love to know in the comments below.

Empty Products

When I used to live in Minneapolis I would collect my empty product bottles/jars and recycle them with Origins.  Origins has this great program where they give you a free sample of one of their products if you bring in items to be recycled.  But, the Fargo area has no Origins store or counter to recycle them at.  Bummer...

I guess it's just an old habit, collecting all my empty products...  I will still recycle them on my own, but it would be nice to turn them in to Origins.

When I go back to Minneapolis, I will take some empty products with me if I'm going to be around an Origins store.  But as for now, I'm just going to recycle all these bad boys and call it a day.  I've been collecting these for about two months and it time to get them out of the apartment.

Do you recycle all your plastic & glass beauty/skincare products?  If so, where do you recycle them at???  I'd love to know in the comments below.

Fashion Friday: Sock Drawer Organization

I'm doing a little series about clothing organization for the next few weeks.  This is just the method that works for me and has been working for me for over the past two years.

I used to not have any organizers in my sock drawers but I found that I was always messing up my neat stacks each time I went searching for a specific pair of socks.  It was making me stressed!

That was just too  much loosey-gooseyness for me...  My mind hurt after looking at my awful sock drawer for too many years.  After I finally got frustrated enough, I watched a drawer organization video on YouTube.  I was saved!  Who knew it only took a little video to get me to do something about my unorganized sock drawer situation.

I got very inspired after my video epiphany and immediately went to my local Container Store to pick up some drawer organizers.  * queue the angels singing *  This is the result...

If you are wondering what organizing elements I used, you can check them out here...

Here is the inspiring video I watched on YouTube...

I love Jen from Organized Like Jen.  Her videos give me such great ideas about organizing my own spaces.  Well done Jen!

Hope this was helpful to some of you all.  How do you organize your sock drawer??  I'd love to know in the comments below.

How I Make My Bed....

If you have an animal, you may be able to relate to this post a little better than the non-pet people out there...

I clean ALL my bedding once a month, including sheets, quilt and pillow protectors.  I tend to wash my sheets every other week, and my pillow cases every week (that helps with face breakouts).

Anyway, when I completely strip my bed this little fuzz ball decides to make himself at home.  You can obviously tell from the look on his face that this is HIS bed, not mine.  He needs a king bed, because he's a little balla with no balls!  haha

I decided to give you a little progression timeline of photos to see what Doyle was doing in the bed all day.  He tends to sleep a lot, he's 7 so he's getting a little older.  After I was finally allowed, by Master Doyle, to make the bed the look on his face changed!  He looks so proud of his clean BIG bed.

Do any of  y'all have that same problem with your pets when you try to make the bed???

Makeup Monday: EOS Lip Balm

It's still pretty cold outside and the air is super dry in the mid-west, so I thought I would talk about my favorite go-to lip balm.  I have a few of these fun sphere-shaped balms scattered around my apartment.  I put a generous swipe on my lips before I go outside to take the dog out, or really whenever I feel like it and I'm good to go.  You can never have too much lip balm in March, right?...

So my favorite lip balm to apply over and over is the EOS lip balm.  You can find links here.  The one I have photographed is the Strawberry Sorbet flavor, but I have these in a bunch of other flavors and they are all amazing!  They EOS brand also makes lotion as well as shave gel.  I think I need to pick up some of those on my next Ulta run!

How do you all deal with chapped lips during the day?  I'd love to know what your favorite products are in the comments below.

Favorite Movie of ALL TIME

I had a question on my Facebook page after I posted my last questions blog. You can find that link here.  A reader was asking about my favorite movie....  So of course I wanted to answer her.

Are you ready?!  My favorite movie of all time is....  SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.  I know, it's sick and twisted.  But I like it - actually I love it!

I like lots of different genres of movies.  Everything thing from to over-produced predictable-ending romantic comedy all the way obscure documentaries.

But what I LOVE about the movie, Silence of the Lambs, is that it's a well written and acted story with lots of twists and turns.  Not a predictable story, in my opinion.  I love movies that make me "think", those are my favorite.

So, what's your favorite movie?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.

Also, if you'd like to follow me on Facebook for updates.  Click here.  Make sure to "like" the page.  This is where I host giveaways and give you daily updates on the blog and other randomness.  Check it out :)

Soaked Saturday

I just had to share my crazy walk with y'all...  Doyle, my dog, and I walk around my neighborhood everyday since I have no fenced in area for him to do his business.

In Fargo, ND we have been enjoying some extremely awesome positive temperatures.  So that means 2 things; snow is melting (wet mess) & messy puppy paws (mud city).

I had to take some photos of the crazy street flooding/melting going on a few streets away from me.  I'm so glad I don't live on that road :/  What a pain in the rear.

Have you had a warm up in your neck of the woods?  I'm finally getting excited for spring :)

Fashion Friday: Closet Purge

Spring has sprung!  So it's time to clean, clean, clean.  If you know anything about me, you know I don't like to keep "stuff".  I absolutely loathe things that don't serve a function in my home.  So keeping that in mind I love to clear out my closet about once a quarter.

This gives me a opportunity to really SEE everything that's in there and what I'm no longer wearing or reaching for.  I tend to get rid of about 5-10% of my entire wardrobe each quarter.  It's always nice to purge things I just haven't been enjoying.  Why not let someone else enjoy them?...

Here are my three general rules for purging my closet....

1. Does it fit?

2. Is it stained, or beyond repair?

3. Do I like the item?

I also purge things form my closet that I have many similar or like items.  For example, if I have 5 white tee shirts, I may only keep 3 of my favorites and giveaway the other 2.  There is no need for me to have that much excess.

It also seems that I tend to put items in the "donate" pile that I haven't been reaching for just because of personal preference.  Not for any particular reason other than I don't enjoy wearing it anymore.

I am taking all my clothing to Clothes Mentor tonight.  You can read a post about that place here.  I'll let you know how much I sell :)  All the rest will be donated in my area.

It always makes me feel so much "lighter" to give stuff away.  I tend to over-buy in the clothing department, but I'm trying to live simpler.  It's a struggle, but I'm going to get there someday.  Any of you out there have the same problem?

Hope this post inspires you to look over your clothes and sell/donate some of them that keep getting passed over.  Good luck!

Thanks for reading!

*UPDATE*
I went to Clothes Mentor last night.  They took about half of my items and I got $44.00.  All the rest of the clothing will be donated :)

Makeup Wipes: Up and Up - Blue Pack

So today we are going to talk about some makeup wipes.  I know, it seems a little crazy that I have a "favorite" makeup wipe.  But I do, people.  So I needed to share, as usual.

Let's go back a ways, shall we?  I started using makeup wipes in my day to day skincare routine about four years ago.  I have tried most of the drug store bands and a few high end ones.  My favorite to date are the Up and Up brand makeup wipes from Target.  Click here for more info about the product.

There are 30 in each pack and they stay moist until the very last one.  If you store them right (upside-down) they will stay hydrated.  (just a little tip from me to you) The worst thing is when your wipes get all dried out, especially the ones you paid a ton of money for.  What a waste!

Also the price on this little gem is nothing short of amazing!  At my local store these retail for $2.99 per pack, this amount can vary from store to store.  Any of the other brand name wipes will be at least $4.00 per pack and typically give you only 20-25 wipes in one package.

These wipes have a nice texture to them (close up photo), I feel like that helps remove any of my excess makeup and oil off my skin at the end of the day.  Some of the high end brand wipes were almost too silky feeling and left tons of makeup on my skin.  Kind of a bummer when you pay top dollar for a product that doesn't sand up to the Target brand... :/

Anyway, I highly recommend these wipes.  I prefer the ones in the blue package because of the texture and the moisture.  I know they carry a 10 pack in the travel section for only $0.99 if you want to try them out first.

And for the male readers out there, I recommend this to you too.  It's a great way to refresh your skin before bed and remove any oils that your face has produced throughout the day.

So what are your favorite brand of makeup wipes?  I'd love to know in the comments below if you care to share.

Face Mask: Glam Glow Supermud

I'm a big fan of face masks.  It's such a luxurious experience and makes my sink feel amazing.  I do lots of different masks on a regular basis.  I tend to do 1 -2 masks per week.

I have been using Glam Glow Supermud on a regular basis since the beginning of the year.  Click here for more details.  This pot retails for $69.00 - It's pretty spendy for the amount of product, but a little goes a long way.  You can even just treat your problem areas and not your whole face.

I like to do my whole face, since I have more oily skin.  This product sucks out all the oils and impurities out of my skin.  The next morning I wake up with beautiful glowing skin!  It's truly amazing stuff.  It also clears up any acne or other skin problems I'm having.

I have lots of other masks I use on a regular basis and I would love to share.  Let me know if you'd like to hear/see a review on those other face mask products.

So, do any of you have great face masks you'd recommend?  I'd love to know in the comments below, if you care to share.
